The book Wanla – History and Culture by Sonam Angchok, published by the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF), was officially launched on July 10, 2025, during the inaugural Wanla Lonpo Festival. The book delves into the rich history, cultural traditions, oral narratives, and architectural heritage of Wanla—a village of historical significance in the Sham region of Ladakh.

Authored by Sonam Angchok, a farmer from Wanla, the book offers an authentic and intimate perspective on the village’s past. Drawing from his deep-rooted connection to the land and its people, Angchok presents a compelling narrative that bridges scholarly insight and lived experience.

The Wanla Lonpo Festival, where the book was unveiled, was a vibrant celebration of the village’s heritage. Featuring traditional music, dance, storytelling, and community engagement, the festival aimed to honor Wanla’s cultural legacy and ancestral traditions. The book launch added both academic and emotional depth to the festivities, underscoring the importance of preserving the region’s cultural identity.
Dr. Sonam Wangchok, founder of HCHF, has been instrumental in supporting local authors through publication initiatives. “I believe books written by local authors are more authentic, as they come from personal knowledge and experience,” said Dr. Wangchok. He further said, “I want locals to write about our culture, history, and heritage.”
Wanla – History and Culture is currently available at Rig-Nas Books & Stationery in Leh, a bookstore dedicated to literature about Ladakh and works by local authors. The shop actively encourages regional writers to showcase their work and connect with a broader audience.
